Monash Essay Writing Competition 2014

A3 Education & Training is proud to organize the Monash Prize 2014, an essay writing competition that was held on 15 & 19 August 2014. The competition was held in 3 high schools in Sandakan, Sabah namely SM Sung Siew, SM St Michael and SM Yu Yuan.
The announcements about the competition were made two months before the day of the competition itself. August is usually the month where students start their final preparations and study for their final SPM or UEC examinations so we were delighted to see so many students still eager to participate in the competition despite how close exam was.
The topic chosen for the competition was based on Malaysia’s agriculture sector which is blessed with successful and progressive Palm Oil Industry and the challenging task it brings in terms of waste management as the industry grows. The students were asked to express their ideas in not more than 500 words one of the more sustainable solution they think that might help turning waste into an alternative energy.

On the day of the competition, some of participating students were visibly nervous while some were very confident. Seeing the students pouring out ideas on their blank paper sheets was a moment that inspires us to give them more similar opportunities to spread their wings and expand their ideas. Reading their essay and helping the teachers to pick out the best 3 essays from each school to submit to Monash University is quite interesting. Some ideas were quite novel and while others are about improving existing projects and solutions. After few days of selecting the essay was submitted to Monash University on 25 August 2014.

After a month of waiting, the results were out and 1 winner was announced for each school. The teachers were very happy with the competition and are looking forward to holding similar activities in the future. Needless to say the winners were super excited to receive their prizes.
